Estate sale find, vintage original breakfast menu for the Nu-Joy Restaurant Diner located in Kentland, Indiana, circa 1930-40's.
The popular NuJoy diner closed down in 1994 after a run of 65 years at two different Kentland locations. The first NuJoy also served as a Greyhound Bus Stop and gas station.
From The Brook Reporter, Brook, Indiana, Thursday, September 13, 1945, issue:
Nu-Joy Destroyed By Fire - The Nu-Joy restaurant at Kentland, together "with all fixtures and supplies was completely destroyed by fire last Sunday afternoon shortly after noon. The fire, that started in the kitchen, spread so fast that one or two cash registers were the only things taken from the building.
According to one of the employees who works in the kitchen, there were several large pans of grease on the range. He thinks that the flue was probably defective and that sparks fell from it into the grease and the entire kitchen "was immediately enveloped in flames.
In addition to the Kentland fire department, the fire departments from Watseka, Sheldon, Morocco, Brook, Goodland, Fowler and Earl Park were called and they assisted in protecting nearby buildings. The building was owned by Henry Reinhardt, of Kentland, and was leased to the Interstate Company, of Chicago and was managed by Harold Holmberg.
A building housing a garage at the north side of the restaurant building was of fire-proof construction and did not burn.
