    Description

From the estate of a western Pennsylvania antiques dealer retired to Tucson during the 1990's is this hand painted wheel thrown miniature redware jar from the Pittsburgh Exposition of 1914 - I believe that would be the Western Pennsylvania Exposition, whose wildly popular program of orchestral and vocal music ( an annual accompaniment to the equally successful showcase of regional industry and craft where this was likely given out) presented an astounding array of top tier talent in the years before WW1. The mentioned dealer handled both old American pottery (primarily stoneware and Pennsylvania redware) and antique French country ceramics. He had a penchant for miniature examples, this being from his own collection. The obviously not mass produced momento features a nicely rendered floral spray in polychrome pigments and is clearly marked "PITTSBURGH EXPO. 1914". I've seen some glassware and other more commercial memorabilia from Pittsburgh celebrations, though no other of these folk art beauties. While I assume at least a few must have been handed out from some venue at the fair, the number of surviving examples must be pretty small. I have not found any others on line. Condition is quite good though not absolutely pristine perfect with a nicely patinated aura of time to the surfaces. Be aware I have done nothing to "refresh" or improve - you want that done, you do it. There are a couple of typical very small surface pits or air bubble cavities that do not extend to the interior of the jar. These are obviously from the making (one is actually covered by the painted decor).  No chips or cracks or any hidden restorations. An old collection label still attached to the foot completes the picture. I'm nitpicking for the obsessive, and a look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Size is about 2 1/2 in. vertical. About 2 13/16 in. at the widest and 1 7/8 in. across the mouth.  If you are a fan of American crocks and jugs of the miniature sort and have the need, or simply wish this one to improve the ambiance of a relevant display, this will have great meaning for you.
